Blood Orange Chocolate Chip Muffins

These muffins have a wonderful bright citrus flavor from the blood orange juice and zest paired with sweet morsels of chocolate for the perfect treat or breakfast!

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup semisweet chocolate pieces
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ½ cup milk
  • ¼ cup blood orange zest
  • ½ cup freshly squeezed blood orange juice
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil


  • Preheat oven to 400°Line twelve 2 ½-inch muffin cups with paper bake cups; set aside.
  • In a large bowl stir together flour, baking powder, and salt. Make a well in the center of flour mixture; set aside.
  • In a medium bowl combine eggs, sugar, milk, orange peel, orange juice, and oil. Add egg mixture all at once to flour mixture. Stir just until just combined. Fold in chocolate chips. (batter will be slightly lumpy).
  • Spoon ¼ cup of the batter into muffin cups.. Bake for 18 to 20 minutes or until a wooden toothpick inserted in centers comes out clean.
  • Cool in muffin cups on a wire rack for 5 minutes. Remove from muffin cups; serve warm.
