This Pear, Brie and Caramelized Onion Flatbread recipe is the perfect balance of sweet, tangy and savory. Made with a packaged grain-free flatbread mix, this recipe is also super easy to make.
The flavors in this flatbread compliment each other beautifully and the crust turns out crispy, tender and delicious. Although this recipe is made with a gluten-free crust, feel free to use any flatbread crust recipe you prefer!
How to Make this Pear, Brie and Caramelized Onion Flatbread
We start by caramelizing the onions because they need about 30 minutes to really develop a good caramelization.
How to Caramelize Onions
Heat olive oil in a medium skillet over medium-high heat. Add sliced onions and cook until softened and slightly browned, about 5 minutes. Lower heat to medium, add sugar, salt, pepper and water to onions and continue to cook until onions are very soft and caramelized.
Add more water to onions as needed to keep them from burning. Once onions are very soft and dark brown add balsamic and cook until all water has evaporated. Set onions aside.
Bringing the Flatbread Ingredients Together
Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly spray or line a baking sheet with parchment and set aside.
Prepare your flatbread crust according to package instructions. The Bob's Red Mill Grain-Free Flatbread Mix that I used for this recipe is ready for the oven in only 5 minutes!
Form two round flatbreads on your prepared baking sheet and sprinkle each with a little salt, cracked black pepper and red pepper flakes. Par-bake flatbread crusts in preheated oven for 5 minutes.
Meanwhile, thinly slice your pear. Remove flatbread from oven and top with sliced pears, caramelized onions and torn brie cheese pieces.
Bake flatbreads for 10 minutes, until golden brown and cheese is melty. Top each flatbread with fresh arugula and a drizzle of honey. Enjoy!
Do I Have to Use a Gluten-Free Crust?
You do not have to use a gluten-free crust for this flatbread recipe. Neither my husband or I have a gluten intolerance, however, I enjoy gluten-free baking because I get to experiment with ingredients other than wheat.
Can I Use a Fruit Other Than Pears in this Flatbread Recipe?
You may certainly experiment with different fruits for this recipe! I imagine apples, plums, peaches or even cherries would be delicious substitutions in this recipe.
Also, feel free to try different cheeses in this flatbread recipe as well. Any good creamy melting cheese or blue cheese variety should work beautifully in this recipe.
